Cedar Deck Boards Help Cultivate Growth in the Community

In the heart of Framingham, Massachusetts, lies a remarkable organization dedicated to combating food insecurity and fostering community connection. Framingham Community Farm is a small, non-profit organization made up entirely of volunteers! Because the farm is volunteer-driven, it depends on the kindness and generosity of other organizations and individuals to achieve its goals. When Diane Bassett, Coordinator of Framingham Community Farm, reached out to Warehouse ’71 through Facebook Marketplace looking for a donation of composite deck boards, we were excited at the opportunity to give back to our community.

Providing fresh, nutritious food and locally grown produce to those who can’t afford it is at the core of Framingham Community Farm’s mission. Looking ahead to 2024, the farm set its sights on an ambitious goal to double the size of their current garden beds. By expanding their growing area, they aim to produce even more food and reach a greater number of individuals and families in need.

When they reached out for a donation, Chris Chaffin, Warehouse ’71’s Sales & Business Development Associate, asked questions to fully understand the scope of the project to make the right material choice for them. Once he understood what the farm was looking to do, he recommended cedar deck boards. Cedar is an ideal material because it us naturally resistant to rot and pests plus it won’t absorb moisture because of the natural oils and resins it contains that protect it from damage.

Warehouse ’71 donated around 80 Inland Red cedar deck boards to help Framingham Community Farm build and extend their current garden beds and build several smaller ones to grow more produce for the upcoming years. This will allow them to increase their growing area by 20%! But Chris went above and beyond just donating deck boards. He came up with an idea to plan a day where everyone could get together to build flower boxes, birdhouses and more out of the leftover materials! The Framingham Community Farm volunteers can sell these beautifully crafted items at fundraisers to raise more money for their cause.
