Deck Railing Components

Starting at the top, the top rail is the main decorative piece of the railing. There are several styles you can choose from, including Premier, RadianceRail, and Trademark.
Next is the bottom rail, which is included in rail packs and kits. During installation, balusters get screwed into the bottom rail.

Under each top rail and each bottom rail is a support rail, which do the rest of the fastening work. The bottom and top support rails fasten to the post sleeves to hold the railing up. And the tops of the balusters are fastened to the top support rail. This design provides you with as fastener-free appearance. And with the support of the foot blocks, the support rails ensure your railing remains sturdy, secure, and squeak free over time.

Balusters are a great way to add unique style to your railing. Use square composite balusters to match the railing color. Aluminum balusters are available in round, and square options only come in black. All balusters come pre-drilled, ready to accept fasteners, for spin-free installation.
On to the sides. Post sleeves are designed to cover 4 in. x 4 in. wooden posts and come in several widths and lengths. Post sleeves can be cut down to exact length needed for your project, but it is crucial they are all a consistent height to achieve a level rail.

Finally, use a cap and skirt to finish the post. There are several styles of post caps you can choose from, to personalize your look. Lighted post caps are a great way to create ambiance at night.
Hardware kits are used to fasten support rails to the posts. If you plan to split one rail section into two sections, you will need one extra hardware kit.
