If you’re a homeowner or contractor working on a re-siding project, you’ve probably spent some time researching the longevity of the siding you’re choosing. Have you also considered the durability of the wood or PVC trim you’ll use? Trim is a decorative accent typically used for filling in gaps between the most vulnerable areas of the home such as windows and doors. Without a quality trim, these vulnerable spaces may become subjected to moisture buildup, cracking and rotting.
You want to make sure that whatever products you use are sturdy, dependable, and easily customizable to your preferences. Generally, there are two kinds of trim on the market: Wood and PVC trim. Wood trim is often made from natural materials like beechwood, maple, walnut, or oak. PVC is an abbreviation for polyvinyl chloride. It’s a synthetic plastic that is molded in a way that resembles wood, only it’s more durable and inexpensive.
Deciding which PVC trim moulding and PVC trim materials to purchase for your next project can feel overwhelming—and here at Warehouse ‘71, we understand that! That’s why we’ve put together a list of the benefits and drawbacks of both wood and PVC for you!
Pros and Cons of Wood & PVC Trim
Wood Trim
Pros
It is Customizable:
Wood can be easily tailored according to your specific wants and needs. Caulk, paints and stains all adhere to wood, creating endless possibilities!
It is Natural:
Many homeowners prefer wood due to its natural colors and qualities for that raw trim look.
It is Recyclable:
Wood can be carefully removed and re-used and/or re-cut, provided it is in good condition.
Cons
It is Porous:
Wood trim requires more attention and treatment than PVC, because unlike PVC, wood is susceptible to rot and decay caused by absorbed moisture.
It Requires Annual Maintenance:
To keep wooden trim looking its best and protected from the elements, wooden trim should be inspected on an annual basis. You’ll need to repaint, caulk, or repair any damaged or exposed trim to prevent rot and decay.
It is Susceptible to Insect Damage:
Like all woods, wooden trim is at risk of insect damage over time. Whether it’s boring insects like carpenter bees or small carpenter ants, these bugs can greatly reduce the lifespan of your wooden trim, without annual maintenance.
It is Expensive:
Wood is generally pricier than PVC and other building materials.

PVC Trim
Pros
It is Durable:
Compared to wood which naturally degrades over time, PVC is water and rot-resistant and won’t be affected by the elements. PVC is also resistant to bugs and pests that can take up residence inside of wood.
It is Low Maintenance:
PVC doesn’t require prior treatment and most homeowners love the clean, crisp look of white PVC trim! But if white trim isn’t your cup of tea, our AZEK Trim with PaintPro technology can be painted or stained.

It is Available at a Lower Cost:
PVC might be a better option for homeowners on a tighter budget, since it can be less expensive than wood.
It is Sustainable:
Our AZEK products are made with up to 90% recycled materials, so there’s no need to feel guilty about using it. In fact, AZEK is the largest vertically integrated recycler of PVC in the US.

Cons
It is More Difficult to Install:
PVC is not a very forgiving material and therefore requires pre-drilled nail holes. Attempting to nail or saw directly into the trim can cause breakage.
It is Not Easily Reusable:
PVC usually cannot be removed and used again.
Its Movement Fluctuates:
Because PVC is produced from plastic, temperature can have an impact on its size. PVC can expand or shrink along its length depending on how hot or cold the weather is. For example, if the trim was installed on a drastically hot summer day, gapping can occur during the cold winter months.
